| 'Modular programmes' allow an award to be built gradually by taking individual
modules (units). Each module is worth a certain number of credits; as modules
are completed credits are accumulated towards an award.
Within a modular scheme undergraduate study is often broken into levels.
Students can elect to undertake courses at level 1,2 or 3. Level 1
(Undergraduate Certificate) is equivalent to the first year of a full-time
undergraduate degree. Level 2 (Undergraduate Diploma) is equivalent to the
second year of a full-time undergraduate degree. Generally, students can only
embark on Level 2 after successful completion of Level 1, although some
institutions may accredit prior learning. Level 3 is equivalent to the final
year of a full-time undergraduate degree, completion of which results in full
degree status (i.e. BA/BSc).
